Welcome to a taste of history!

Denver’s original steakhouse, The Buckhorn Exchange is located in the city’s oldest neighborhood, just 5-minutes from downtown Denver -- with a light-rail stop right across the street. This National Historic Landmark and Western Museum has been serving the finest in Old West fare since 1893.

Prime grade beef steaks, buffalo prime rib, elk, salmon, quail, game hen, and succulent baby-back pork ribs are just some of the marvelous offerings on the Buckhorn menu. Exotic appetizers such as alligator tail and buffalo sausage are available, and no dinner is complete without the house specialty, Rocky Mountain Oysters.

For lunch we serve up a lighter fare including our renowned Grandma Fanny’s pot roast sandwich, enormous beef and buffalo burgers and more!

The Big Steak

Steak Dinner Our Specialty There is an old sign on the north side of the building that says 'Steak Dinners Our Specialty.' The same legend was also found on old menus and newspaper advertising. In keeping with this tradition, the Buckhorn Exchange offers large-portion steaks, intended for two to five guests. The steaks are cut from our New York strip loins, with the tail removed and all but a very thin layer of the fat cover. Cooked large like this, a lovely crust is formed and most agree that is the only thing better than our steaks that are cooked for one. Your steak is carved tableside and served with a sizzling crock of sautéed mushrooms and onions. Of course, soup or salad and side dish are included as with all our dinners. Additional cooking time is required

Everything about this experience was amazing! Our server Dora was lovely and so much fun. All the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. So much history in this space. Very cool rooftop bar. If you’re looking for food unique or to Colorado, this is the place. Will not soon forget this food experience! Must try if you’re in Denver!

It truly is a special place to visit! From the autographed photos to the animals on the wall! Try something interesting on the menu. How could you not want to go to Colorado’s oldest restaurant?!

The wine list is dated and needs to be brought to todays standards. No prosecco or champagne by the glass which can dampen the start of the a celebration dinner. Our appetizer was the tips of meat in a spicy sauce which ended up in being scraps of fatty pieces mixed with mushrooms. The sauce was spicy and flavourful. Main course was cooked to perfection. Enjoyable apple pie dessert. This restaurant embraces its colourful past.

My wife and I drove from Colorado Springs for her birthday. She wanted the Rocky Mountain oysters. Buckhorn is one of the few places that sell them. For 200 dollar meal the oysters were soggy, the ribeye special was ok but not that tender as a ribeye usually is. We had no alcohol but still spent so much and drove 120 miles round trip to enjoy a, what should have been, a great meal in a fun place. It was ok. In addition, we felt as if we were being pushed out the door as fast as they could clean up. Won’t be back.

Service and atmosphere were excellent. The sausage app and the elk and bison entrees were also excellent. The reason for the 4 star rating is my cowboy ribeye had too much gristle and I was charged $20 for a single quail on the side which seems high when a two quail dinner is $31.

Our waiter was very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. We loved the story about the Navybean soup. :) The food was delicious and cooked to specifications. It was a little noisy, but we could hear each other over the table. If you have the chance, and you’re okay with taxidermied animals everywhere, you should go to this restaurant. :)

Probamos elk y búfalo ambos estaban deliciosos! Ojo con pedir los rocky mountain oysters (no son ostras jajaajja) no me di cuenta hasta que llego el plato y probamos, ahí busque por Internet y pues sorpresa no eran! No se si era obvio pero para mi no lo era jajaj. Comoquiera sabían bien! Creo que vale la pena por lo que representa el primer restaurant en Denver y los platillos qué sirven son muy buenos!
