In every city, there is a natural gathering spot for city folk and neighborhood people in the know. This place in Saint Paul is know as Bennett's Chop & Railhouse. Located on West Seventh & Victoria, it is the perfect meeting place of uptown and downtown, of quiet neighborhood and big city lights.

It's called a chophouse because it specializes in a casual steakhouse atmosphere with top-of-the-line cuts of the finest meats. It is a Rail-house because it is on the old railroad line serving the city and rail drinks (as well as top brands) are served in the convivial atmosphere of the horseshoe bar.

And of course Bennett's is Bennett's because owners Joe and Meghan Bennett ensure that welcoming hospitality is always served. They have taken their decades of experiences with leading hospitality brands and translated it into an intimate venue where you're not only a customer, but more importantly, a welcome guest.

We went before a wild game, arrived at 3:25 for a 5pm game, thinking we had plenty of time. Our food came at 4:40 and we still had to catch the shuttle, meaning we had to stuff our $100 meal in minutes. Thankfully, they ran an extra shuttle, but it made the experience less than normal expectations.

Good set of choices on the menu. Food was tasty and well prepared (my steak was a little overdone so I would probably discuss that with the server in the future). Staff was friendly and responsive, We were seated immediately when we arrived.

I had dinner tonite. Ordered a sirloin and was impressed with the flavor. I was disappointed with the menu posted on OpenTable showcasing the Tomahawk Ribeye at $38 when it is. Actually $58. The service was fair once they got started, but it took them about 10 minutes to figure out why we were sitting at a table with absolutely nothing after having been seated by them. As for the noise level in the restaurant, it was borderline unbearable. No sound buffer. No sound absorption. Extremely loud.

Disappointing. We are not fussy eaters but 2 of the 4 steaks were so undercooked that they needed to be sent back, however the fries and sides were excellent. Our server was not that busy but rarely stopped back to refill drinks, etc. I doubt we will be going back.

We have been dining at Bennett's for YEARS and the food has ALWAYS been wonderful. But last night the food was just not up to par. The house chop salad, my all time favorite, had no flavor at all and the homemade chicken pot pie, another top ten lister, was just so-so. I'm quite sad as it seems so many of the small independent places we like to support are having quality issues. We will go back again, because maybe it was just an off night. I hope so.

Martinis are amazing! And a great value. My table liked the chicken wings and the Reuben burger. The chop salad was luxurious, lots of meat and cheese, enough for two. We loved the ambiance, unpretentious and friendly.

Bennett’s has a lovely neighborhood vibe. We especially like the free shuttle to the Excel center after dinner for events.
