    We went to Benihana for dinner with 8:30 reservations -our chef didn't come out until 9:50. Didn’t get out until closer to 11pm. It was a Thursday - and we came to find out we were waiting because 2 people who we were seated with requested their friend to be the chef. We did not request this, did not know them, and did not appreciate having to wait extra (an hour?!) with no one communicating this to us. Also, did not receive the steamed rice that was ordered with my meal, by that time we were so hungry and it was past 10pm, we didn’t even want it. The real tea: The chef kept taking shots with his friend during our “show”, and we didn’t get the typical fire blaze or shrimp toss. Also, when did they change the parking to require valet except for a few spots in front of the hotel? We are locals, I’m not going to pay for valet. Really disappointed. So much money for a really terrible experience. I didn’t pay $200 to watch some strangers hangout and drink. There were 4 other people at that table that did not get fair service imo.

    We were seated within a reasonable amount of time. A server, who was covering for our server (Alyson), arrived at our table within a few minutes and took our drink and food orders. After our orders were taken, we didn't get our drinks for over 30 minutes, which was very disappointing. When our orders were taken, we emphasized that we did not want mushrooms. Of course when the soup was delivered, lots of mushrooms were floating on top of the soup. When our salads were delivered, Alyson immediately left before we could ask her for forks. We had to wait 10 minutes before we could flag down another employee to request forks. Our chef, Angel, arrived at our table exactly 1 hour after we were seated. He was entertaining but compared to the other chefs, he did not do the "volcano," which we believed should have been a big part of the entertainment. Our chef prepared everyone's food quickly and accurately. The food looked and tasted delicious. This dining experience was only rated as 3 stars overall. The service definitely could have been better based on the very expensive menu prices, which prices have increased 50% over the last 4 years. (Thanks Biden!!!!). Although celebrating birthdays at Benihana has been an annual tradition for the past 15+ years, we might have to reconsider celebrating birthdays at less expensive restaurants if Benihana prices continue to spiral upwards. Sadly food prices have soared 50%, but food portions have noticeably decreased and service levels have not been at acceptable levels, possibly due to personnel shortages.

    Benihana was, well, Benehana. This time we got our cook very quickly; but the filet mignon I received was not up to the usual standards (not tender, but chewy) as was the colossal shrimp. But my wife's filet & lobster was perfect. Had a very nice birthday dinner, with good people at our table, and a entertaining cook. For a Tuesday evening (5pm), it was very busy and noisy, but that can't be helped. All in all a nice time.

    Cal is one of the best chefs in the house. Interactive the entire time and tons entertainment. Me and wifey go here alot

    The main food was delicious. The soup when they brought out was warm not hot and the salad a little wilted. The show they normally do was not great. The chef didn't do much but he cooked the food great.

    Upon arriving to check in for our reservation - we were advised there would be an hour delay due to the chefs being behind by 12 tables. We decided to wait and were seated 20 minutes later. When we arrived at our table - the table across from us were celebrating a birthday yet their children were crying and distraught. Turns out they had been waiting for 2 and a half hours for a chef to arrive. Other tables had waited for over an hour for a chef. Our server arrived and took our orders and started to bring out drinks etc. However, we waited for 25 minutes for a Piña Colada - so we figured our luck was not going to be any better and we chose to leave. This is not the first time This has happened to us at this location. I am very disappointed that this location has yet to figure out how to adequately staff or at least control the guest amount so that we don’t have to is happen again. I also had some gift cards that expired yesterday that I was unable to use because of this staffing issue. Do not really know if I would return here.

    This was honestly one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. We had reservations for 5:45 and we didnt end up having a chef to our table until 7:15. Luckily, the people we were grouped with were fun so it made the wait a bit better but if I’m paying over $300 for dinner, the service better be up to par. Luckily, out hibachi chef was fantastic and we made sure to thank him appropriately. However, after speaking with a manager and expressing how disappointed myself and my partner were with this experience, the manager offered us a measly 20% discount for the inconvenience. Huge disappointment and lack of accountability from management. Never once in the 1.5 hours we waited did a manager touch the table and apologize or ask how they can make it right. If fact, the only manager I saw during that time ran back to the kitchen as soon as we started asking about our dinner and was never to be seen again. Cowardly to the max. Completely unacceptable, and with so many other fantastic restaurants in SD, I do not ever see myself returning to Benihana. I’d much rather drive up to Solana Beach and dine at Samurai. After all was said and done, my partner and I coughed up $350 for an extremely mediocre meal. Never, ever again. Good luck, Benihana. I see you following the ways of Red Lobster
